Resources
A curated list of platforms and tools worth knowing about — whether you're looking to pitch in somewhere new, run a volunteer program, or just want to understand the landscape.
Find volunteer opportunities
These platforms let you search by location, cause, and availability. Most are free for individuals. A few notes on what each one is actually good for.
- Idealist idealist.org
The largest volunteer and nonprofit job aggregator in the US. Merged with VolunteerMatch in September 2025, so both platforms now feed into one. Search by location, cause, or skills — good for finding both one-time projects and ongoing roles.
- JustServe justserve.org
A community service project finder that works well for groups and one-time events. Organizations post projects and you can search by ZIP code. Clean interface, easy to use.
- Points of Light pointsoflight.org
A national service network that connects volunteers with local opportunities through affiliate organizations across the country. Also operates HandsOn Network, which many local volunteer centers are part of.
- GivePulse givepulse.com
Widely used by universities and corporations for community engagement programs. If you're tracking service hours for school or an employer matching program, this is where you'll likely do it. Also useful for finding opportunities independently.
- Spark the Change Colorado sparkthechangecolorado.org
Colorado-specific volunteer connector with search by county, cause, and availability. If you're in the Denver metro or anywhere in the state, this should be your first stop alongside Idealist.
- All for Good allforgood.org
A Google-backed volunteer search engine that aggregates listings from multiple platforms in one place. Good for a broad sweep when you're not sure where to start.
For organizations — find and manage volunteers
Running a volunteer program is a different problem than finding one. These tools help with recruitment, scheduling, and keeping track of who showed up.
- Galaxy Digital galaxydigital.com
Full volunteer management software with scheduling, hour tracking, and reporting. Used by nonprofits, cities, and community organizations. More capable than most organizations need at first, but worth knowing about when you outgrow spreadsheets.
- SignUpGenius signupgenius.com
Free and straightforward. Create a signup sheet for an event or recurring volunteer shift, share the link, done. Not a full volunteer management platform, but for small organizations running a food drive or cleanup, it's usually enough.
- VolunteerHub volunteerhub.com
Enterprise-level volunteer management platform for larger organizations. Handles registration, waiver collection, hour logging, and reporting at scale. Integrates with Salesforce and other nonprofit CRMs.
- HandsOn Connect / Points of Light pointsoflight.org
If your organization wants to post opportunities to the HandsOn Network (used by many local volunteer centers), Points of Light is the entry point. Reach is broad, particularly in cities with an active local affiliate.
- Colorado Nonprofit Association coloradononprofits.org
Colorado's state association for nonprofits. Offers resources for building and improving volunteer programs, along with training, advocacy, and peer networks. Membership-based but much of their content is publicly accessible.
General resources
Background reading, federal programs, and a few specialized platforms worth knowing about.
- AmeriCorps (Corporation for National and Community Service) americorps.gov
The federal hub for national service programs: AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and VISTA. If you're interested in a longer-term service commitment — months, not hours — this is where to look. Living stipends and education awards are available for many positions.
- National Conference on Citizenship ncoc.org
Research and data on civic engagement trends across the US. Useful for organizations making the case for volunteer programs internally, or anyone curious about what community participation actually looks like at a national level.
- DoSomething.org dosomething.org
Youth-focused campaigns and volunteer projects, mostly designed around issues young people care about. If you're looking for ways to get teenagers involved, or you're a young person yourself, this is a practical starting point.
- Create the Good createthegood.aarp.org
AARP's volunteer connector, aimed at adults 50 and older. Searchable by location and interest. Good for finding opportunities that are flexible on scheduling and welcoming to volunteers who want to contribute professional experience.
- Catchafire catchafire.org
Skills-based volunteering that matches professionals with nonprofits for pro bono projects — graphic design, financial planning, marketing strategy, web development. If you have a specific skill and want to put it to use, this is more targeted than a general volunteer search.
