Group mentoring for kids ages 8-15 with YMCA Reach & Rise
Two adult mentors paired with six kids for weekly two-hour sessions at a Denver YMCA. Structured activities in a supportive group setting.
Why we picked this
If one-on-one mentoring feels like too much, this group model pairs two adults with six kids for structured weekly sessions — lower pressure, still meaningful.
The YMCA’s Reach & Rise program uses a therapeutic group mentoring model: two adult mentors are paired with a group of six youth ages 8-15 for weekly two-hour sessions. Activities are structured and designed to build trust, social skills, and confidence in a supportive environment. You’re not doing this alone — your co-mentor and YMCA staff are right there.
This is a good fit if one-on-one mentoring feels like too big a leap. The group format means there’s always someone else to lean on, and the structured programming takes the pressure off figuring out what to do each week. A background check is required for all YMCA volunteers.
Contact Sandy McClain, the volunteer coordinator, at smcclain@denverymca.org or 720-524-2728 to learn which branch locations are running Reach & Rise sessions and how to get started. The YMCA also has openings for teen mentors, youth sports coaches, and food distribution volunteers if group mentoring isn’t the right fit.
