Why we picked this

Short warehouse shifts that make multi-day backcountry trail projects happen — loading and unloading 30-60 lb tools alongside VOC staff who'll walk you through everything.

Before VOC’s backcountry trail crews head into the field, someone has to load the truck. These two-hour warehouse shifts at VOC’s Lakewood facility are the unglamorous logistics work that makes longer wilderness projects possible. Volunteers work directly alongside VOC staff and crew leaders to organize, carry, and load or unload heavy trail tools — pulaskis, rock bars, McLeods, and other equipment that goes out on multi-day projects.

Expect to lift 30 to 60 pounds repeatedly, work on your feet the entire shift, and navigate the tight storage spaces of a working gear room. It’s physical, uncomplicated, and done in about 90 minutes once you get moving.

Four shifts are available in August: loading on Friday August 14 (9–10:30am), unloading on Sunday August 16 (6–7:30pm), loading again on Friday August 28 (9–10:30am), and unloading on Sunday August 30 (6–7:30pm). Sign up for whichever shifts fit your schedule — each has just 2 open spots. Ages 18+. Note: Google Maps may direct you to 1450 South Ammons Street, which is incorrect; VOC will confirm the exact address when you register.
