Why we picked this
Pull invasive Phragmites from the water's edge and open up space for native plants at an 85-acre Aurora park. Staff show you what to look for and how to remove it safely.
Volunteers will learn to identify invasive Phragmites plants and remove their seed heads along the water’s edge at Sand Creek Park in Aurora. The work involves getting close to the water — bring waterproof footwear if you have it. VOC staff will demonstrate safe removal techniques and how to distinguish invasive from native species before the work begins.
Sand Creek Park is an 85-acre park co-managed by Aurora and the Sand Creek Greenway Regional Partnership. Removing Phragmites opens the corridor for native riparian plants to reestablish, improving water quality and habitat for wildlife. Loppers are provided; wear layers and bring water and sunscreen.
The park entrance is at 2700 Peoria St in Aurora. Register through the Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado website at volunteervoc.org.
