Why we picked this
Day 1 of the Raccoon Trail reroute — trail construction, switchback building, and rock walls on a section worn out by heavy foot traffic. Part of an ongoing 6-year project at Golden Gate Canyon.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park’s Raccoon Trail has been taking a beating from heavy visitor use on a steep, unsustainable alignment. This project — now in its sixth year — is rerouting that section with a crew-built alternative featuring switchbacks, rock retaining walls, and properly graded tread. Day 1 (July 11) brings together up to 34 volunteers to dig, move rock, and frame the new route’s structure.
Work runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Volunteers will rotate through trail construction tasks including digging new tread, setting rock walls, and creating switchback landings. No prior experience required — VOC staff lead the crew and provide all tools and instruction. The project is rated moderate to difficult; expect real physical output over a full day with limited shade.
Volunteers must be at least 16. The trailhead is 2WD accessible, and carpooling is encouraged. Bring your own lunch, plenty of water, and sturdy boots. Cell service is limited at the site. Register by July 9. A second workday is scheduled for August 15 if you want to return and see the progress.
