Why we picked this
Day 2 of the Raccoon Trail reroute — continuing switchback and rock wall construction where the July crew left off. The long timeline of this project means each day of work builds visibly on the last.
The Raccoon Trail reroute at Golden Gate Canyon State Park continues on August 15 with a second full crew day picking up where the July 11 volunteers left off. The project is closing a heavily eroded section of trail on steep terrain, replacing it with a sustainably graded alignment that features switchbacks and rock retaining walls. Since the work started in 2020, each season adds measurable progress toward the completed reroute.
Up to 44 volunteers will work from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on tasks including trail excavation, rock wall construction, and switchback shaping. VOC staff lead all crews and provide every tool; no experience is needed, but you should expect a physically demanding day with digging, lifting, and movement across uneven terrain. The rating is moderate to difficult.
Volunteers must be 16 or older. The project rarely cancels for weather but may pause briefly for safety assessment. Bring your own lunch and water; the trailhead is 2WD accessible and carpooling is encouraged to reduce traffic. Cell service is limited in the park. Register by August 13.
