Why we picked this

An intentionally inclusive outdoor event for Pride Month β€” clear invasive plants along First Creek while helping restore the riparian habitat that the Montbello and Green Valley Ranch communities depend on.

This half-day project on June 13 brings volunteers together along First Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River, to remove invasive plant species including curly dock, mullein, musk thistle, Canada thistle, and tumble mustard from about 1.5 acres of riparian habitat. VOC and Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges are co-hosting with an intentional focus on creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants.

Previous restoration work in this corridor has already reduced storm flooding and allowed native cottonwood saplings to establish β€” this event continues that progress while improving trail access for the Montbello and Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods nearby.

Age 10+. Half-day commitment: 9am to noon. Park at the Visitor Center. Registration deadline is June 11. Wear sun protection and comfortable shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.
