Timber step construction at Parkfield Lake Park in Denver
Build timber steps on a degraded hillside trail at Parkfield Lake Park in Denver's Montbello neighborhood — digging, lumber placement, and gravel work on a steep slope.
Why we picked this
Urban trail work in Montbello: building timber steps on a steep, eroding hillside at Parkfield Lake Park. A full-day project with visible, immediate results in a Denver neighborhood that doesn't get much volunteer attention.
The hillside trail at Parkfield Lake Park in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood is eroding, and a crew will spend the day building timber steps to stabilize it. The work involves digging into the slope, lifting and positioning lumber into place, and laying gravel — physical work on a steep gradient that directly improves trail safety and halts erosion. Volunteers who can’t handle the primary tasks have an alternative: weed removal work in the same park.
The project runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on a Friday. The park is easy to reach — the project site is a five-minute walk on paved trail from the parking area, and restrooms are on-site. Difficulty is rated moderate to difficult; this is heavy, hands-on work. Volunteers must be 18 or older, and groups should arrive with at least two members.
