Why we picked this

Alpine trail work above 12,000 feet — installing tundra support walls and rock check steps to stop foot traffic from tearing up fragile vegetation below one of Colorado's classic 14ers.

Spend a weekend building retaining structures on the Mount Sneffels trail in Yankee Boy Basin, one of the most photographed alpine basins in Colorado. The work means constructing tundra support walls and rock check steps by hand — hauling stone, digging, and setting rock to hold the trail line and keep hikers from widening it further into surrounding tundra. Saturday runs a full 8 hours; Sunday wraps up by noon.

This is a difficult, high-altitude project: expect up to 2 miles of hiking with elevation gain to reach the worksite, hauling materials at 12,000+ feet, and no cell service once you’re in. Bring layers regardless of forecast — afternoon weather at this elevation turns fast. A vehicle with moderate clearance (AWD recommended) is needed to reach the free campsite, where VOC provides breakfast, lunch, and Saturday dinner (Friday dinner is on your own).

Only 6 of 33 spots remain per shift, so this one’s close to full. It’s suited to volunteers who’ve done trail work before or are ready for a genuinely physical weekend — the payoff is a rare chance to leave a lasting mark on one of the state’s most iconic mountains.
