Read one-on-one with a student at a Denver school
Weekly reading sessions with K-6 students at four Denver-area schools. One hour a week, books provided, substitute readers welcome.
Why we picked this
One hour a week reading with the same kid β you take turns, the books are chosen for their level, and substitutes cover when you can't make it.
Partners in Literacy is a grassroots Denver nonprofit that pairs adult volunteers with students for weekly one-on-one reading sessions. You and your student take turns reading to each other from books chosen for their interest and reading level. Everything is provided β you just show up.
Four school sites are currently active, each with a specific day and time slot:
- Stedman Elementary (2940 Dexter St) β Fridays, 9:30-10:30 AM, kindergarten and 2nd grade
- Bill Roberts K-8 (2100 N. Akron Way) β Weekdays, multiple slots between 10:20 AM-1:10 PM, 6th grade
- St. Elizabethβs School (1800 Pontiac St) β Tuesdays, 1:45-3:10 PM, 2nd and 3rd grade
- Boston Elementary (1365 Boston St, Aurora) β Thursdays, 10:45-11:30 AM, 4th grade
The commitment is one hour per week for the school year. If you have a week where you canβt make it, substitute readers fill in β so thereβs no pressure to maintain a perfect attendance record. Email pil2011@partnersinliteracy.org to get started.
