Why we picked this

This crew closes the social trails hikers have worn into hillsides and replants what grows back — quieter work than trail building, but just as necessary for the land.

Jeffco’s Trails and Natural Resources teams run an ongoing restoration program aimed at reclaiming unauthorized “social” trails — the informal shortcuts and off-route paths that fragment habitat and speed up erosion — and helping native plant communities recover once they’re closed. Work includes cutting brush to naturally screen closed routes, seeding and planting natives, and general ecological restoration tasks alongside park staff.

It’s outdoor, physical work: expect to hike to the project site, then spend a few hours on your feet using hand tools. No experience is necessary; training happens on site from staff and experienced volunteers. Wear closed-toe shoes, bring water and gloves, and dress for changeable mountain weather.

Volunteers must be 18 or older. Apply through the Offero Get Involved page for the Trails: Restoration Volunteer role — Scott Waters and the Trails team coordinate scheduling and any orientation requirements once you’re signed up.
