Why we picked this

A two-day weekend commitment that actually moves the needle — you show up Saturday as a stranger and leave Sunday having framed walls alongside the family who will live in them.

This two-day build event runs Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for one or both days — both days are available through the registration form. The build is currently in framing, which means the work is physical and visible: raising walls, securing sheathing, and setting window frames. Habitat’s site leaders run morning safety briefings and pair first-timers with experienced crew throughout the day.

Work hours are 7:45 AM to 3:30 PM both days. Lunch is provided on site. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and work-appropriate clothing. Habitat supplies all tools, lumber, safety gear, and materials. The build site is in a residential area of Gresham, about 20 miles east of downtown Portland; carpooling is encouraged and a MAX light rail + bus combination from downtown takes about 55 minutes.

Groups of 8 to 15 are welcome and Habitat Portland Metro East has a streamlined group registration process. Corporate or organizational teams should reach out at least three weeks in advance. Individual spots fill up faster for spring builds — registration typically closes 10 days before the event date.
