Revive an abandoned garden plot and clear hail damage at Whittier Garden — Jun 13
Roll up your sleeves at Whittier Elementary Community Garden: prep a large neglected plot for planting and help clear hail storm debris. Sturdy shoes required.
Why we picked this
Two hours of digging and planting at Whittier — prepping a large abandoned plot from scratch and clearing debris from a recent hail storm. Good for families with older kids.
The community garden at Whittier Elementary has a large plot that sat unused last season. On June 13, volunteers will prep it from the ground up: weeding, tilling, and planting seeds and seedlings to get it producing again. The work doubles as hail storm cleanup after recent severe weather hit the garden.
This is hands-on physical work — expect digging, hauling, and getting dirty. The organizers welcome families with older children. Bring sturdy shoes (no sandals), sun protection, gloves, and a water bottle. No bathrooms are available on-site, so plan ahead.
Whittier Elementary Community Garden is in Denver’s Cole neighborhood at Lafayette St & 24th Ave. Up to 8 volunteer spots available. Coordinated by the Central Cucumbers DUG program.
