Fruit tree pruning at Barnum Orchard with Denver Urban Gardens
Learn hands-on pruning techniques at one of Denver's community food forests. Three hours on a Saturday morning, no experience needed.
Why we picked this
Saturday morning in a community orchard learning to prune fruit trees — a practical skill you can use in your own yard, and the trees need it before spring growth starts.
Denver Urban Gardens maintains food forests across the city, and the trees at Barnum Orchard need pruning before spring growth kicks in. On February 28 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, DUG’s Tree Keeper program hosts a hands-on pruning session where you’ll learn proper technique on real fruit trees.
No experience necessary — DUG staff will walk you through the basics. Pruning is one of those skills that transfers directly to your own backyard if you have fruit trees. Dress for the weather, wear shoes you can get muddy, and bring work gloves if you have them.
This is part of DUG’s broader Tree Keeper program, which stewards food forest sites year-round. If you enjoy the pruning session, there are ongoing opportunities for watering, mulching, and general care throughout the growing season.
