Why we picked this
Aurora Water's xeric demonstration garden attracts hummingbirds, goldfinches, and native sparrows to its drought-adapted plantings — the July walk pairs bird spotting with a practical look at what Front Range gardeners can plant to support local wildlife.
Denver Audubon and Aurora Water co-present this free bird walk at Aurora’s water-wise demonstration garden — a showcase of xeric and drought-adapted plants that thrive in the Front Range’s semi-arid climate while supporting local wildlife. The July edition coincides with peak hummingbird activity as broad-tailed and black-chinned hummingbirds work flowering plants through mid-summer.
The walk is both a birding outing and an informal tour of what water-wise landscaping looks like in practice. The demonstration garden shows how reduced water use doesn’t mean reduced wildlife habitat — the right mix of native plants and xeric species can attract more birds than a traditional lawn-based yard. Look for hummingbirds, American goldfinches, and native sparrows among the plantings.
The walk runs from 8:30 to 10 AM at 15151 E Alameda Pkwy in Aurora. Free to attend, with a $5 suggested donation supporting Denver Audubon programs. Bring binoculars if you have them. No prior birding experience needed.
