Why we picked this
A free 3-mile bird walk along South Platte River wetlands led by two Master Birders — early May is peak migration, which means the variety is worth the 7 AM start time.
Walk the Wetlands is a free, guided three-mile walk along level paths following the South Platte River and adjacent wetlands at Denver Audubon’s Kingery Nature Center. Two Audubon Master Birders lead the group, pointing out species along the way and answering questions. The walk runs from 7 AM to 10:30 AM — early morning when bird activity is at its peak.
Early May falls during spring migration, which makes this one of the better-timed bird walks of the year. You don’t need binoculars (though they help), and no birding experience is required. The terrain is level and accessible. Register through the Denver Audubon events page before the session fills.
Kingery Nature Center sits along a stretch of the South Platte River corridor — one of the most important migratory flyways in the region. Even a three-hour walk can turn up dozens of species during spring migration.
