Why we picked this
The South Platte River corridor at Kingery Nature Center is a critical wildlife corridor through the Denver metro — July walks focus on breeding residents like yellow warblers, kingfishers, and various herons rather than spring migrants.
Walk the Wetlands is Denver Audubon’s recurring guided walk along the South Platte River corridor at Kingery Nature Center in Littleton — a three-mile route through riparian wetland habitat that remains productive for birds throughout the year. The July edition focuses on summer residents and breeding species rather than spring migration, offering a quieter but no less interesting experience than the busier migration walks.
By early July, yellow warblers and other riparian nesters are raising young, great blue herons and great egrets work the shallower stretches of the river, and belted kingfishers patrol the water’s edge. Audubon Master Birders lead the group, pointing out species and explaining what to listen for in the bird soundscape.
The walk is approximately three miles on level terrain and runs from 7 AM to 10:30 AM. All skill levels welcome. A $5 suggested donation is appreciated but not required. Kingery Nature Center is at 11280 Waterton Rd. in Littleton.
