Why we picked this

By late October the fall push has mostly settled into winter residents — a good walk for comparing against the September edition and seeing how the species list shifts as the season turns.

This free three-hour guided walk returns to the south end of South Platte Park as fall migration winds down and winter waterfowl numbers build along the river corridor. The C-470 trailhead area stays productive through the colder months, with the open water drawing ducks and geese that will stick around for winter.

Flat terrain keeps the walk accessible for most fitness levels. Dress warmly — late October mornings along the river can be considerably colder than they look.

Free and open to all skill levels. The walk runs 8 to 11 AM at the South Platte Park C-470 trailhead in Littleton.
