Why we picked this

Jewell Wetlands is one of Aurora's most productive birding spots — a restored wetland complex along the High Line Canal that draws a mix of waterfowl, shorebirds, and marsh species uncommon elsewhere in the metro.

Jewell Wetlands in Aurora is a restored wetland complex along the High Line Canal that punches well above its size for birding diversity. Denver Audubon leads a four-hour morning walk here on June 28th — a longer outing than most of their guided walks, reflecting how much ground there is to cover and how many species the site can produce.

The wetland habitat draws ducks and shorebirds, while the marsh edges host red-winged blackbirds and, in good years, secretive marsh species like Virginia rail or sora. The adjacent trail network adds grassland habitat for sparrows and raptors. Late June means breeding birds are active and vocal, making this one of the better times to visit.

Meet at 13005 E Jewell Ave in Aurora. The walk runs 7 AM to 11 AM. Free to attend; a $5 suggested donation is appreciated. All birding levels welcome — this longer format walk suits anyone who wants to go deeper into a single site.
