Bluff Lake Nature Center — free evening bird exploration
Free evening walk exploring Bluff Lake Nature Center's wetlands and prairie habitat in east Denver. Late-summer birds active at golden hour. Aug 27, 4:30–6:30 PM MDT.
Why we picked this
Bluff Lake sits inside the old Stapleton airport footprint, now restored wetland and prairie — a reminder that good bird habitat can come back fast once you stop mowing and start planting native.
This free evening walk explores Bluff Lake Nature Center’s mix of wetland, prairie, and cottonwood habitat in east Denver. Late August brings a full cast of residents and early migrants, plus plenty of dragonfly and insect activity that draws flycatchers and swallows out over the water.
The two-hour walk covers easy, mostly flat trails and wraps up as the light turns gold, one of the more scenic times to be out. Guides point out species and explain how the site’s restoration from former airport land shaped the habitat you’re walking through.
Free and open to all skill levels. Bring binoculars if you have them and water for the walk.
