Why we picked this

September is when Belmar's resident waterfowl start sharing the water with the first true migrants — the mix changes almost week to week from here through fall.

Denver Audubon’s Evening Bird Break returns to Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park for a free guided walk as fall migration gets underway. September brings a noticeable shift from the late-summer lineup, with the earliest southbound migrants starting to stop over alongside the park’s resident ducks and geese.

The park’s mix of open water, cottonwoods, and shoreline cover makes it a reliable spot for a varied species list, especially as activity picks up in the cooler evening light. Guides help with identification and point out what’s changed since the last visit.

No birding experience required. Bring binoculars if you have them. Free to attend with a $5 suggested donation. Meet at 801 S. Yarrow St. in Lakewood at 6 PM.
