Birding at Bear Creek Greenbelt — free June guided walk in Lakewood
Free guided bird walk along Bear Creek Greenbelt's riparian corridor in Lakewood. Summer residents and nesting activity along the creek. Jun 24, 8:30–11 AM MDT.
Why we picked this
Late June at Bear Creek Greenbelt means nesting season in the riparian corridor — yellow warblers, Bullock's orioles, and various flycatchers are all actively raising young along the creek by mid-summer.
Bear Creek Greenbelt threads through the southwest Denver metro as a riparian corridor connecting Lakewood’s residential neighborhoods to open green space. Denver Audubon’s guided walk covers the creek-side habitat where cottonwoods, willows, and shrubby vegetation support a range of breeding birds in late June.
Expect to find yellow warblers, spotted towhees, various flycatchers (both western and Cordilleran are possible), and Bullock’s orioles working the canopy. The creek itself can attract shorebirds and kingfishers. Breeding season means birds are territorial and vocal — which makes them easier to find than during migration.
Meet at the Bear Creek Trail Parking area at 2800 South Estes St. in Lakewood. The walk runs about 2.5 hours. A $5 suggested donation is appreciated but not required. All skill levels welcome — no prior birding experience needed.
