Why we picked this

123 acres of native habitat tucked inside a Denver suburb โ€” the stewardship work here has a direct, visible effect on a rare urban natural area most neighbors don't know exists.

Bluff Lake Nature Center is a 123-acre urban open space in Denverโ€™s Central Park neighborhood, managed as a native habitat preserve. Monthly stewardship workdays focus on three types of work: removing invasive plant species (primarily reed canary grass and phragmites along the lake edge), planting and tending native grasses and wildflowers, and assisting with wildlife monitoring activities that track birds, amphibians, and other species using the site. Staff and trained volunteers lead each task group, so no prior experience is needed.

Workdays run from 9:00 AM to noon on a Saturday each month, typically on the third weekend. The site is compact enough that you can see the difference your work makes within a single morning โ€” a cleared section of shoreline or a newly planted patch of native seed mix. Bluff Lake actively encourages families to attend; there are task options suitable for younger kids, and the nature center staff are good at explaining the ecological reasoning behind what youโ€™re doing as you work.

The site is in the middle of a dense residential area and is accessible by car, bike, and the 15L bus route along Colfax. Parking is available in the small lot off Havana Street. Wear clothes you donโ€™t mind getting muddy, especially for any shoreline work. Gloves, tools, and materials are provided. Workdays are weather-dependent โ€” check the Bluff Lake website or email list before heading out if conditions look uncertain.
